Glenn Pollock

Glenn has been a member of NCUPS for over 20 years. He offers the following perspective on his work:

In her book "A Natural History of the Senses", poet Diane Ackerman wrote, "Because the eye loves novelty and can get used to almost any scene....much of life can drift into the vague background of our attention.... Art has a habit of waking us up, turning on the lights, grabbing us by the collar and saying, 'Would you please pay attention!'."

In my photography I try to "turn on the lights". Sometimes it works, most times it doesn't. I like to show commonplace objects or scenes in a different light from the way we normally see them. I came into underwater photography through the "art" door, rather than that of "science", preferring the image to be the end itself, rather than a means to explaining things scientific. Although I've tried to learn the scientific names of my photographic subjects, I usually soon forget them, falling back to the often more poetic common names; Proliferating Anemone, Lion's Mane Nudibranch, Saddleback Wrass, and so on.
