Monte Smith

Monte has been seriously pursuing the art of underwater photography for nine years. He has studied photography under Chris Newbert, building his expertise in both macro and wide angle photography. Monte's dedication paid off when he won the 1996 Nikonos Shootout in Monterey and went on to win the Grand Prize against the winners of three other regional competitions. In 1998, Monte won an unprecedented nine awards in the Northern California Beach Dive Photographic Competition, including Best of Show.

In his pursuit of the art, Monte has traveled to the Red Sea, the Solomons Islands, New Guinea, Indonesia, Malaysian Borneo, Thailand, Burma, Palau, Honduras, Belize, and Hawaii. In wide angle photographs that include a diver, he enlists the services of model, PADI instructor and former ice-skating competitor Laurie Cava.

Monte uses Canon F-1 cameras in Ikelite, Hugfot, and Aquatica housings and Nikonos cameras for special purposes.
