April 2003's Featured Photographer

Kathy Mendes grew up on the San Mateo Coastside (California) where she spent most of her time riding, drawing and reading about horses. Kathy still has Starlight, a beautiful purebred Arabian mare that she rides occasionally and feeds carrots to often. Kathy learned from her mother who is a talented artist, and drew and painted pictures for many years. She continues her interest in art, but now in the form of photography.

The other big interest for Kathy is SCUBA diving and underwater photography. Certified in 1991, SCUBA has been a part of her life since. "It is truly another world!" Kathy is also a member of the Monterey Underwater Photographic Society, and Wildlife Photographers of Silicon Valley. Also a member of the California Council of Divng Clubs she attends meetings regularly and reports on another interest, the ocean environment.

Since joining NCUPS in 1999 she has worked hard at many important positions in the club. She has helped design many of the forms we use today for the International Photo Competition and the Beach Dive competition. She was the newletter editer for a year, and the webmaster for several years. She even volunteered as refreshment coordinator for a year.
