About Bob Commer
Bob Commer was active in various aspects of underwater photography for nearly forty years, from the very early 1960s until his death in 2000. He won many awards for his still photography, including top prizes at the Los Angeles Underwater Photographic Society contest, the San Diego Underwater Photographic contest, and at the NCUPS International Underwater Photography contest. His photos were published in a number of magazines, including Skin Diver.
Bob pioneered many underwater photographic techniques and was influential in the development of early underwater camera housings and other equipment. He worked for many years for Oceanic, an industry leader in the field of SCUBA and skin diving gear as well as underwater photographic equipment.
In addition to still photography, Bob was actively involved in the making of a number of underwater films in an era when today's miniature underwater video cameras were still only a dream.
Bob was active in NCUPS during most of his adult life. In his younger years, he served as President of the organization for several terms, as well as holding other offices. In later years, he spent much time and energy helping younger and less experienced photographers develop their skills. He became quite expert with computers and other modern technologies; if he were still living, he would probably be a leader in the field of digital photography!
Donations
The NCUPS Board is actively seeking additional donations to the Bob Commer Award endowment fund. The more money that is donated, the larger annual award we can give out in Bob's memory. As of this writing, we have raised approximately $11,000; we hope to raise significantly more. All donations, large or small, are welcome. Because NCUPS is tax-qualified as an educational organization under Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, all donations are tax-deductible.
